Union is the smallest town in Connecticut, a place where forests stretch for miles and the night sky grows dark enough for the stars to shine clearly above the hills. Much of the town remains untouched wilderness, with long trails winding through the woods and quiet ponds hidden among the ridges.
For hikers and campers, it is a peaceful place.
But those who spend enough time in the deep forest around Bigelow Hollow sometimes say the woods feel older than the towns surrounding them—like a place that remembers things long forgotten.
And now and then, the woods seem to answer back.
The Phantom of the Nipmuck Trail
One of the best-known paths through Union is the Nipmuck Trail, a long route that winds through eastern Connecticut and passes directly through Bigelow Hollow State Park.
Hikers have followed the trail for generations.
From time to time, however, travelers have reported encountering a strange figure along the path.
The stories are remarkably similar. A lone hiker will spot another man walking quietly ahead on the trail. The stranger is usually dressed in clothing that looks slightly out of place—sometimes described as an old coat or a broad hat more suited to another century.
Whenever someone attempts to catch up with him, the distance between them never seems to change. Eventually the figure rounds a bend in the trail or disappears briefly behind a stand of trees. When the hiker reaches the same spot, the stranger is gone. No side trails. No footprints. Nothing.
Some believe the mysterious figure may be the ghost of an early woodsman or guide who once traveled the same forest paths long before the trail existed. Others say the phantom appears most often when someone has lost their way—and that the figure somehow leads them back toward the proper trail without ever being seen clearly again.
Whether guide or ghost, the man on the Nipmuck Trail never stays long enough to be followed.
The Fires in the Woods of Union, CT
Long before Union became a town, the deep forest around Bigelow Hollow was already the subject of strange stories.
Colonial settlers traveling through the region occasionally reported seeing fires burning high in the hills at night—small gatherings of light that seemed to appear in remote places where no settlement existed.
Rumors quickly followed. Some believed the lights belonged to travelers or hunters moving through the wilderness. Others whispered darker explanations.
According to early folklore, groups practicing witchcraft were said to gather deep within the woods where they would not be disturbed by the nearby villages. Strange chants were sometimes reported echoing faintly through the trees, and travelers occasionally claimed to hear voices speaking in low tones before falling suddenly silent.
By morning, the fires would be gone. No ashes. No footprints. No sign anyone had ever been there.
Today Union remains one of the most remote and heavily wooded towns in Connecticut. Hikers continue to follow the Nipmuck Trail through
Bigelow Hollow, and campers still pitch their tents along the quiet shores of Breakneck Pond.
But sometimes, when the air grows still and the darkness settles deep among the trees, a lone traveler might glimpse a figure walking ahead on the trail, just beyond reach.
And somewhere in the distance, far out in the woods beyond the lake, a small fire might flicker briefly between the trees before vanishing once more into the night.
